Hip Procedures

Hip injury and disease, although typically associated with the elderly, can affect anyone. Painful hip conditions can have an impact on the thigh bone (femur), pelvic bone, nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments, blood vessels, and internal organs.

What are the symptoms of a hip disorder?

The hip is a complicated joint made up of bone, cartilage, ligaments, muscle, and a lubricating fluid. The symptoms of a hip disorder will differ depending on the cause of the disorder and the part of the hip joint that’s causing problems. Common symptoms of a hip disorder include:

  • pain in the hip
  • limping
  • reduced movement in the hip joint
  • referred pain (may be felt in the leg)
  • muscle stiffness
  • pain in the leg when you apply weight on that leg

People with arthritis may experience chronic pain and pain especially when walking. If you fall or have an accident involving your leg and you develop swelling or pain in your hip, seek medical attention immediately. These symptoms might mean you have a fracture. An untreated fracture can cause serious complications.

Types of Surgeries

Arthroscopy (also called arthroscopic or keyhole surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure on a joint in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage is performed using an arthroscope, an endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision.

Endoscopic surgery uses scopes going through small incisions or natural body openings in order to diagnose and treat disease. Another popular term is minimally invasive surgery (MIS), which emphasizes that diagnosis and treatments can be done with reduced body cavity invasion.

Open surgery is the traditional type of surgery in which an incision is made using a scalpel. While minimally invasive surgery has become increasingly popular, there are a number of situations in which open surgery is still preferable.
